While many people across the country today feast in celebration of Fat Tuesday, locals to the YMCA gyms across Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati decided to burn calories instead of gorging.

Regional leadership of the iconic health club chain decided to offer free fitness for anyone interested and able to participate, according to a report this week from The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Story author Kathy Lehr detailed the counterintuitive marketing strategy, writing:

The YMCA is trying a different approach this year, inviting everyone in the community to participate in its “Fit Tuesday” Mardi Gras celebration.

Group exercise classes are free and open to the public Tuesday, March 5, at all 13 YMCA locations across Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. The YMCA promises a spirited day of fun and fitness — with a few surprises planned, too.

The YMCA’s group exercise programs aim to support active members’ health and wellness goals, encourage social interaction and feel great. For a complete list of free classes offered, visit MyY.org.

Tradition helps bond individuals together, so perhaps those seeking to maintain an active lifestyle ought to consider making Fit Tuesday a new annual trend. The festivities may not attract as much attention as the ones enjoyed on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, but they should leave participants feeling better on Ash Wednesday.
