How to train like an Olympian

With the 2018 Winter Olympics approaching, everyone will soon have the opportunity to watch the world’s greatest athletes on full display. These Olympians have been training for months and years to showcase their worldly talents and win gold for their countries.

Because Olympians represent the best of the best, their stories on how to achieve athletic excellence can serve as a guide for all people who enjoy active lifestyles.

CNN recently spoke with Lindsey Vonn, the 33-year-old gold-winning skier who has been tirelessly training for the upcoming Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea this February.

“We’ve looked at preparation from every angle,” Vonn said during an event hosted by her long-time sponsor Under Armour in the Canadian ski resort of Lake Louise late last year.

While skiing might seem to be a leisurely activity for some, Vonn’s competition in the downhill game requires pristine fitness.

Much of Vonn’s exercise routine is not done outdoors in the cold snow. Rather, she trains indoors with her long time trainer Alex Bunt.

“The preparation period is vital,” Bunt said in Lake Louise. “It gives Lindsey that confidence to push out of the start gate knowing she’s prepared and knowing she can push herself to the limit.”

“We track everything, we track every weight she lifts, every rep she accomplishes,” said Bunt, who is in his third year of working with Vonn.
“We track time on the hill, how many runs she takes, how far those runs were, how she’s feeling each day. The goal is try and quantify the entire sport and see where we can improve.”

Vonn is particularly adept on stationary bikes. She uses the bike, which can be found in every gym in the country, to reach high intensity in order to get her heart going.

“She’s extremely fit on the bike,” Bunt said, who tracks Vonn’s heart rate, number of watts produced and lactate levels during spin sessions to make sure she is working at the correct intensity.

“Her bike and cardiovascular fitness is amazing,” Bunt said. “That’s what allows her to ski the number of runs that she does, the number of successive days in a row of skiing. It just gives her that fitness to continually perform for five months on the hill.”

Vonn can’t win gold simply by hitting the slopes. She, like every other athlete, has to hit the gym to ensure her body is prepared for the grueling competition that is known as the Olympics.
