Americans more concerned about seeing themselves in a swimsuit than seeing a shark

A national study commissioned by Planet Fitness revealed that more Americans are concerned about being seen in a swimsuit (24 percent) than the possibility of seeing a shark (13 percent).

Hitting the beach stresses some people out, with 46 percent saying they would rather speak in public than wear their bathing suit. However, it’s not just about being seen in a swimsuit that causes anxiety, as even shopping for one generates a certain fear. Twenty-seven million Americans share anxieties when it comes to shopping for a bathing suit, and 56 million confess they would even choose getting a sunburn if it meant they could avoid the shopping altogether.

As a result, Planet Fitness is inviting everyone to join the Judgement Free Zone, a safe place where like-minded members can feel comfortable and unintimidated. Starting today, Planet Fitness has a limited time offer available for new members to join for just $1 down (enrollment fee), then $10 a month with no commitment. The promotion runs through July 12 at any of its more than 1,500 clubs throughout the United States and Canada. Click here to find a Planet Fitness near you.

“Many people feel self-conscious about their bodies and being seen in public by the beach or pool. Planet Fitness wants to encourage everyone to embrace themselves as they are, leaving more time to enjoy the summer, whether in our clubs or at the beach,” said Jamie Medeiros, Vice President of Marketing at Planet Fitness, in a press release.
